How to Outline a Short Story.

The process of writing a short story may at some point intimidate you even when you completed writing a whole novel a few days ago and ask about assignment help. Despite the brevity, short stories require more work, ensuring that you structure it to attain the right form for your reader’s liking. For this reason, if you are having a hard time writing short fiction stories, you will likely struggle structuring one even for a structure less one. These step by step tips will shed some light on what you can do to have an appealing short story structure.

Make a Summary of the Short Story

When you get an idea for a short story, first begin with a summary of it. This involves writing what will happen to your characters, which will do what and so on. Describe the narrative from the beginning to the end. However, there are no specific rules for doing this, but you should take it systematically. If summarizing is not your cup of tea, try to write in sentence form. You do not have to explain everything in detail, just a simple idea that will spark your thoughts while writing.

Define the Themes and Character roles

At this point, start to write down the roles of your characters. If you have not come up with a name yet, use temporary names. From there, note down the characters theme and everything they present in the short story. Also, explain their importance and what they are expressing in the story. Also, indicate their connection in the story.

Defines Your Main Theme

After you have sorted out the roles of the characters, you can now focus on the central theme of your story. You should know that this is an entirely different type of theme from the characters themes. Mostly, in a fiction story, characters make an additional point for the general story. Even for the main character, they all have their themes. Now that you know you have some time to reflect on the theme of the story.

Outline the Story’s Structure

You now have the core concept providing a direction to the story and the purpose of writing it. You may now structure the outline of the story. Start at the highest level and connect the summary with both the story’s and characters’ themes. A high-level approach helps people who prefer not to outline more than those who want first to outline then proceed with writing the story. Nonetheless, if you like structuring, you will need to begin with this level. Here is an example of a short story structure;

  1. 1st plot- Give a brief description of general life (Introduction)
  2. 2nd Plot – Anything happens, but it should be out of everyday life. (body)
  3. 3rd Plot- Characters start to adjust to the changes (body and conclusion)

Outline the Major Parts of the Story in Detail

For every point in the plots, provide a detailed outline. You can break the parts down into different scenes. Do this by writing every main plot separately so that each section can be exact. But if you are keen, it can still be done on a single sheet.
